Punch Application

PEP’s ONE CLICK Punching Technology is Magic!

The PEP Technology Punch Application Software has been written entirely in-house by our PEP Technology staff. The PEP Software does NOT use any 3rd party applications such as Automatic Nesting Engines, Tooling Engines or Graphic Kernels, etc.

PEP Technology Punch Application is an automated CAM Software solution that automates the programming tasks for Punch and Combination machines. Our superior tooling logic can process complex tool paths, optimize material utilization and streamline your production workflow.

How It Works

PEP AUTOMATICALLY Converts, Nests, Tools, Repositions, Sequences tool hits, Post processes the NC code and generates a quote.

Benefits and Features

PEP Technology supports all major CAD formats PDF Conversion, Interactive or Fully Automatic Intelligent Automatic Nesting, Work Zone Repositioning Automatic Sequencing Tool Path Simulation Reports Job Costing, Machine Scheduling, Inventory WIP /ERP Integration, and Shop Floor Data Collection.

Master Libraries, Tool Lists & Tool Sets Automatic Selection of Tools Geometric Pattern Recognition Optimized Tooling Strategies Automatic or Interactive Tooling Forming, Stamping & Printing Special Tooling Support Automatic Clearing Smart Tabbing with Special Tools Virtual Multi-Tool Station Support Smart Tool Station Safety Zones.

A Master Tool library for each unique punch machine (Amada, Koike, Trumpf, Whitney, etc.) is setup by the user “one time”, and should include all tools for available for the machine. The master tool library contains input fields for entering the tool description and other pertinent information about each tool such as Shape, Size, Nibble percentage, Clamp Safety Zones, Type, Tool Set, Station number.

Within the Master Tool Library the user has the option to identify a tool as being part of a “group” of tools referred to as a “Tool Set” ( ex. Tool Set 1, 2, 3, etc. ). A tool set might be tools kept in the turret, and or, tools required for a job.

A tool list is typically 1 to 40 tools necessary to tool a job. The tools in the master tool library are copied into the “Tool List” by the Punch Automatic Tooling logic. The user does NOT identify and or copy the tools from the master library, the entire process of selecting the tools and copying them into the Tool List is done automatically.

The user enters the name of the Tool List (typically the job name). After creating the nest, the tooling logic pulls tools from the master tool library, copying them into the Tool List automatically. The tooling logic compares the part geometry in the nest to the tools in the master library and the “Tool List” and adds missing tools to the “Tool List” as required. When no exact tool can be in the Master Tool Library the software prompts the user, displaying tooling solutions. Tooling solutions include undersized, oversized, hits with combinations of rounds and rectangles.

The Punch Software allows the user to create a job using three different programming modes.

  • Lights out
  • Semi-Automatic
  • Manual

The Automatic Importing of Tools from the Master Tool Library can be run in a fully automatic or in an interactive way using an intuitive list of suggested tooling solutions.

  • Auto-Import Exact Size Tools from Master Tool Library.
  • Interactively select suggested Tooling Solutions.

The interactive mode prompts the user to override the Automatic Tooling logic.

  • Import exact tool from Master Library.
  • Interactively choose from a suggested list of optional tooling solutions.
  • Interactively select alternative tools and tooling strategies.

Program and operate auto indexing and non-indexing tools automatically or manually.

  • Auto-indexing Y/N
  • Keyed Angle Support

The Automatic Tooling Software will apply Special Tools to both INTERNAL and EXTERNAL geometry.

The yellow tool in the picture is a 4-corner external special tool that was applied to every hit in the nest automatically.

Automatic Tooling will apply Special Radius Tools to Internal and External geometry automatically. The

Yellow tool is an example of the PEP Punch software’s ability to find and tool complex tooling solutions.

The Automatic Tooling logic will apply Special Tools automatically. The Cluster Tool logic is used to automatically tool most of the perforated hits . The balance of holes that cannot be hit with the special cluster perforation tool because of interference with the part edge or clamp interference are completed using a standard single tool hit

Multi-Tool Stations and Mini-Turrets are automatically detected and applied during Post Processing.

The Tooling logic will automatically clear internal and external contours to reduce the chance of loose material and to avoid unnecessary tabbing.

The Automatic Tooling Software can apply Forming, Stamping, Drilling & Tapping tools.

The Tooling Software can automatically apply Standard and Special Tabbing Tools to maintain maximum sheet integrity during the machine program run and unloading.

The Tooling logic can automatically apply Special Tabbing Tools such as Bowties and Trapezoids.

The Sequencing Software automatically sequences Tools by Type, Shape or Classification.

The Sequencing Software automatically sequences all Tools by type and individual hits to reduce tool changes and optimize machine productivity.

  • The Tooling Software will automatically Combine and Join tool hits to optimize machine productivity.
  • The Tooling Software will automatically detect and tool common parting scenarios to increase material yield and reduce machine time.

The Repositioning Software will automatically or interactively reposition a tooled nest.

The punch software will automatically place the work clamp positions.

The Repositioning and Work Zone Software will automatically detect Oversized Nested Sheets and suggest tooling Solutions for various machine size constraints.

The Sequencing Software supports Trap Door and Part Ejection solutions.

The Punch Automatic Tooling software will support Single Part and Multiple Part Punch processing.

The tooling logic will automatically apply common edge tooling when the parting tool in the “Tool List” is the same size as the part spacing in the nest.

The tooling logic will automatically detect “Shear to Size” and or “Blank Nesting” scenario’s. Geometry along the material edge will not be tooled, the notched geometry will be tooled.

The Punch Automatic Nesting software will automatically nest around or beneath the clamps as defined in the sheet borders. If the clamps extend into the nest area the software will nest around the clamps when set to YES, nest around clamps.

The Punching Software supports Clamp Safety / Dead Zones and a list of Valid Station Numbers.

The Punching Software supports complete Nibble Scallop Control using maximum and minimum nibble percentages.

The Punching Software automatically checks for part interference and un-tooled geometries.

The PEP Software provides Tool-Path Simulation and checking using Step Draw or the Machine Simulator.

The Press Air feature is used to air assist slug evacuation through the punch and into the die. The PEP Punch Application Software and Post processors have been enhanced to control this machine operation.

  • Punch Plans are a specific progressive punch “Operation” that can be defined by the user and saved during the conversion process of a CAD file.
  • Punch Plans are specific to a material type, thickness, and grade.
  • Punch Plans are defined with a specific Tool Library.
  • Punch Plans are defined by assigning a tool or tools to a specific geometry by size.
  • Punch Plans are saved to the SQL database.
  • Punch Plans can be recalled by “Material”, “All Materials” or by a “Tolerance” value.
  • Using a punch plan will eliminate tedious manual tooling solutions that require multiple progressive hits.
  • Using a punch plan will eliminate tedious manual tooling solutions that require pr-punch and forming operations.
  • Will ensure that the tooling used to punch a specific geometry does not exceed the available tonnage.
  • Will ensure that the tooling used to punch a specific material thickness does not exceed the length of the punch tool.
  • Will eliminate broken tools.
  • Will ensure mistake free pre-punch selection when tapping operations are used.
  • Punch plans can be automated in the CAD converter.

The PEP Technology Punch application can track the number of hits each punch and die tool makes. This enables you to better track the tool wear for optimized sharpening and replacement intervals.

The PEP Software provides Process Report Timing, Costing and Machine Setup Tooling Reports.
